      The iron ore mining business is currently operating in a highly competitive environment where mining companies face pressures that threaten their survival and competitiveness has become a major concern of mining managers and managers.. Being competitive, a construct of characteristic not directly observable and incapable of being measured with a single observable variable, without a consensual definition among researchers, official organisms and entrepreneurs, the question arose as to what is the set of variables that allow to explain the competitiveness of the mining of iron. In the present study, using a qualitative method, using an inductive logic and assuming a constructivist paradigm, the explanatory variables of the competitiveness of iron mining companies were determined, using information from a sample of 9 mining companies from Iron ore, which account for 70% of the world iron ore market.       El negocio de la minería de hierro, actualmente se desenvuelve en un ambiente altamente competitivo, donde las empresas mineras enfrentan presiones, que amenazan su supervivencia, y la competitividad se ha convertido en principal preocupación de los directivos y gerentes de las mineras. Siendo la competitividad, un constructo de característica no observable directamente e incapaz de ser medida con una sola variable observable, sin una definición consensuada entre investigadores, organismos oficiales y empresarios, surgió la interrogante sobre cual es el conjunto de variables que permiten explicar la competitividad de la minería de hierro. En el presente estudio, realizado utilizando un método cualitativo, bajo una lógica inductiva y asumiendo un paradigma constructivista, se determinaron las variables explicativas de la competitividad de las empresas de minería de hierro, utilizando para ello la información de una muestra de 9 empresas mineras de hierro del mundo, que representan el 70 % del mercado mundial de mineral de hierro.
