- Abstract:
Studying the treatment of apocryphal matter in the Castilian flos sanctorum demands to revisit its medieval sources, to observe that tolerance with the less severe categories of the apocryphal was restricted in the 16th Century, in the context of the Protestant Reformation. This is perceived by comparing the intentions declared in the forewords by the Catholic compilers and their antagonists. In terms of criteria that were not alien to Catholic reformers, but that are intensified as a reaction to Lutheran criticism, post-Tridentine Catholic hagiographers repudiate not only the false, but also the doubtful and the written by unknown authors, thus distancing themselves from the medieval permissiveness with the last two categories. In addition, the mockery of hagiographic falsehoods becomes a weapon for Lutherans and a threat that must be prevented for Catholics. By attending to these approaches it is found that the Italian Lippomano and the German Surius, beyond being the source of the material for Villegas and Ribadeneira, the main post-Tridentine Castilian hagiographers, provide them also with methodological guidelines and criteria of orthodoxy. Estudiar el tratamiento de la materia apócrifa en el flos sanctorum castellano obliga a remontarse a sus fuentes medievales, para observar que la tolerancia con las categorías menos graves de lo apócrifo se restringe en el siglo XVI, en el contexto de la Reforma protestante. Así se percibe al comparar las intenciones declaradas en los prólogos por los compiladores católicos y sus antagonistas. En función de criterios que no eran ajenos a los reformistas católicos, pero que se intensifican como reacción a las críticas luteranas, los hagiógrafos católicos postridentinos repudian no solo lo falso, sino también lo dudoso y lo escrito por autores desconocidos, desmarcándose así de la permisividad medieval con las dos últimas categorías. Además, la burla de las falsedades hagiográficas se convierte en un arma para los luteranos y en una amenaza que debe conjurarse para los católicos. Al atender a estos planteamientos se comprueba que el italiano Lippomano y el alemán Surio, más allá de constituir la fuente de la materia para Villegas y Ribadeneira, los principales hagiógrafos castellanos postridentinos, les sirven también la pauta metodológica y los criterios de ortodoxia.
