    • Abstract:
The article discusses on the umbrella and polytheistic scientific disciplines and their elites. Disciplines act as the frame work for specialist communities, but do not themselves intervene in the knowledge production process. Polytheistic disciplines focus on research practices and techniques rather than developing explanatory approaches appropriate to a particular specialty reality concern. Umbrella disciplines focus on the research of specialty concerns than on disciplinary issues and specialties are more prominent than the discipline as sources of cognitive and social identities. In the polytheistic disciplines, there is no coherent disciplinary élite, in the sense of a group of scientists acting as guardians and interpreters of the institutionalized ordering principle, legitimating specialty concerns and models and allocating resources. The existence of more developed ordering principles and associated goals in the umbrella discipline provides a basis for authority and the components of scientific activities are more developed and distinct sub-units of organization are evident.
