    • Abstract:
Microfinance as a tool for fighting poverty and market-based entrepreneurship development came to Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1996 througth the Local Initiative Project, supported by the World Bank and some other international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) such as ICMC, World Vision, Care International. The results achieved in the last eleven years put B-H amoung the leading nations in this field of finance. The extraodinary results of microcredit organizations (MCOs) in B-H opened the door for B-H experts to speak about microfinance on the conferences around the world. Unfortunately, the success and results of the MCO sector are much less known in our own country. In this paper we will give a brief overview of development process of the MCO sector in B-H over the past ten years. We will also stress the main challenges this sector is facing today. Our analyses are primarily based on the Microfinance Centre (MFC) data. MFC is a regional association of all microfinance institutions (MFI) that operate in South East Europe (SEE) and Newly Independent States (NIS). Our main conclusion is that the MCO sector in B-H has all the hallmarks of a mature microfinance sector -- the increasing efficiency and stable profitability as well as the tighter profit margins and lower gross revenues. which accompany increasing competition. • Abstract:
