    • Abstract:
The article reports that in 364, the new Augustus Valentinian raised his younger brother Valens to his own rank of Augustus. The contemporary observer Ammianus Marcellinus wrote of this a verse that is given in the article. The statement by an acute and well-informed observer of the imperial office is unequivocal in its conviction that Valentinian and Valens were the first equal partners in the Empire since Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus. Without investing Ammianus with an infallible political judgment, his statement nevertheless has particular implications for the way in which apparently equal collegial emperors are understood.
