The article discusses bioclusters in the western U.S. The author notes the energy, enthusiasm, and optimism of scientists, entrepreneurs, and educators in the bioclusters of the western U.S., which she argues are hubs of creative research institutions and life sciences companies. Topics include the social aspects of bioclusters, such as their role in enlivening communities, raising scientific awareness, and creating diverse economic opportunities, the unique history of individual western U.S. bioclusters, and examples of companies operating in western U.S. bioclusters, such as BayBio in California's San Francisco Bay Area, Life Technologies Corporation in San Diego, California, and Novo Nordisk in Seattle, Washington.
